Our First Twitterverse Thursday: Grammys Edition

GIRLS WHO ROCK is happy to announce the addition of a new weekly column for our blog: Twitterverse Thursday. Each Thursday, our intrepid Digital Engagement Officer Shelley Tibbetts will be covering all of the movers and shakers, fans, and tweeps talking all things music, tech, and girls’ education on twitter. Here is her first piece for the blog!

Sunday marked the 54th year for the biggest night in the music industry.  From Jennifer Hudson’s tribute to Whitney Houston (the shocking news of her untimely death was released late Saturday afternoon), to Adele’s big win the Twitterverse was buzzing about the #GRAMMYs. Here’s our round up of the highlights:

 JHuds’s Tribute To Whitney

The loss of music legend and a 6-time GRAMMY winner, Whitney Houston set a somber tone on a celebratory night for music. The Recording Academy added a last-minute tribute to the lineup as a homage to one of their own. An emotional and flawless delivery of the classic “I Will Always Love You” by Jennifer Hudson left the crowd silent and touched America’s hearts. She later tweeted about the performance, calling it “the greatest honor of my life”.

Katy Perry Debuts New Single

A blue-haired Katy Perry performed crowd favorite “E.T.” and then…. oh wait did the TV just break?!? No worries Twittersphere, it has since been confirmed that Katy was just debuting her new single “Part of Me” singing ‘so you can keep the diamond ring, it don’t mean nothing anyway, in fact you can keep everything’. Russel Brand, the general consensus is that this one’s for you!

 Nicki Minaj “The Exorcist”

From arriving on the red carpet with a man dressed as the Pope to her “Roman Holiday” performance as her alter ego Roman Zolanski, Nicki Minaj wins for… stirring up one of the biggest controversies of the night. She creeped out viewers and fired up the Catholic League, who issued a statement questioning whether the singer-rapper is possessed.

Adele’s Sweep

With a amazing comeback performance after vocal cord surgery and a clean sweep of six awards for her album 21, there is no denying it was Adele’s night to shine. The down-to-earth singer credits her success to a ‘rubbish relationship’. Well, were glad to hear those are good for something Adele!

Where’s Gaga?

Despite receiving three nominations for her album Born This Way, it was a low profile night for Gaga and the Twitterverse took notice. From skipping out on the red carpet, to her seating arrangement during the awards and even her ‘lace face’ – everything Gaga was a hot topic.

Paul McCartney’s Medley Of Beatles Classics

The 54th GRAMMY’s ended the night on a high note with a phenomenal medley of Beatles classics performed by Sir Paul McCartney, who was later joined by Bruce Springsteen and David Grohl among others. Thanks for the ‘Golden Slumbers’ Sir Paul (we needed that after Minaj)!

If see any tweets that catch your eye about girls education, music, and tech, tweet your interesting twit bits to @girlswhorock and you may see them next week on GWR Twitterverse Thursday!
