Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2012 Inductees Beastie Boys, Guns N Roses, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Today the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced their 2012 inductees and three 90s powerhouses — Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Beastie Boys—were among the artists to receive the honor.
These three acts have continued to show their music prowess in the new millennium, however their meteoric rise and dominance of the music charts sets them apart from the numerous bands from the Grunge era.
Gun N’ Roses first topped the charts in the 90s with the singles, “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” Their first album Appetite for Destruction peaked at the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 in 1988. To date, their first album has be certified 18X platinum and sold 28 million copies worldwide.
New York rap trio Beastie Boys have been blending the genre of hip-hop with rock, pop, ska, rock and soul since their in your face single, “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To) Party.” Their catchy anthem and addictive tracks transformed into hip-hop first #1 album with License to Ill in 1986. Moreover, the Beast Boys use of sampling in their second album Paul’s Boutique provided a master blueprint for any hip-hop artist looking to sample. As of 2010, The Beastie Boys have sold 22 million albums in the United States, and 40 million worldwide.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers first caught the attention of main stream audiences with their release Blood Sugar Sex Magik in 1991. The album has sold over 15 million worldwide and contained the smash hits: Under the Bridge and Give it Away. As well as commercial success—overall 70 million albums sold worldwide—-the Chili Peppers have received critical praise as with 7 Grammy wins and 5 MTV Video Music Awards.
Along with these bands, late singer/songerwriter Laura Nyro, Scottish Folk singer Donovan, and the British group The Small Faces (the group later changed their name to the Faces when Rod Stewart fronted the group). Notably, this honor will put Rod Stewart in the rarefied position of being inducted into the Rock Hall twice; he was inducted as a solo artist back in 1994.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony will take place on April 14 at the Cleveland Convention Center in Ohio.
In honor of this rainy day in New York, I have included one of my favorite GnR tracks above, November Rain.
