The Power of Social Media: Introducing She’s the First*{Van Meter}!
Remember back in March when we featured Shorty Award Winner and Educator Shannon Miller on the blog? Well, Ms. Miller and her students have joined forces with She’s the First to become their first non-college chapter, She’s the First*{Van Meter}!Shannon was enthusiastic to form a She’s the First Chapter with a group of girls from her 7th grade class. She’s the First Founder (and GIRLS WHO ROCK co-founder) Tammy Tibbetts contacted Ms. Miller on how they could begin to establish this chapter with her students. A skype session was set, where Fellow Campus Coordinators Monica Townsend and Casey Kraft took ideas from the students about summer fundraising and helped the student choose their STF partner school. The She’s the First Van Meter chapter choose last year’s GIRLS WHO ROCK beneficiary Africaid Kisa Project. Within hours the girls were already on their way to setting up fundraisers and giving talk to their school. In true form, Ms. Miller (who incidentally won the “Connecting People Award” at the Shorty Awards) has already set up She’s the First*{Van Meter}’s twitter and Facebook accounts. With Ms. Miller’s help, these girls are showing everyone that a world of difference can be made even through a simple skype session in an Iowan classroom.
