WIRED Magazine’s First Female Engineer Cover

MIT educated engineer Limor “Ladyada” Fried makes history as the cover of WIRED’s April issue. Ms. Fried has the honor of being the first female engineer to be featured on WIRED’s cover ever!

While some bloggers have taken issued with Fried’s appearance on the cover, Fried is plain and simple an engineering rockstar. She runs the successful open source electronic hardware company Adafruit Industries, which details with blueprints and PDF how to assemble nifty gadgets for any budding engineer. One of their most popular gadgets is MintyBoost, a DIY charger, made out of an Altoids mint case, for your iPod or iPhone.

In 2009, the Electronic Frontier Foundation honored Ms. Fried with an Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award for her extensive work in open source hardware. She made a name for herself when her website put a $2,000 bounty for anyone who could write an open source hack for Microsoft Kinect operating system. Rather than send a cease-and-desist letter, Microsoft spokespeople stated that they were ‘excited’ about what people would create and do with open source drivers. Ms. Fried has been called a MacGyver of sorts by her colleagues, but she is an inspiration for any young female techie looking to dive into the world technology and engineering.
